Hello Everyone.

With one remaining meeting before we have our instillation dinner I would like to congratulate all of our current members for your involvement. Attending our meeting and conferences, bringing great food and ideas gives us a hometown feel in a big town. Our new members should feel right at home.

Over the last year we have had the opportunity to receive insight and knowledge from experts in fields of study ranging from surgical infections and bariatric surgery to flash sterilization and bloodless surgery. As we go forward into the coming years we are interested in making this information available to our members who work hours other the 7-3pm and 9-5pm.

This month we will continue on our track of great informational presentations with a lecture from Dr Matthew Lutch of Kaiser Permanente. He is a head and neck surgeon and will be speaking on surgery of the larynx. Plan to attend this lecture for the most current information in this field and earn one continuing education unit.

Remember to vote in our chapter election, attend the AORN lecture series on Friday May 13 in Poway and bring a friend to our next meeting. Print the educational flyer.

I’ m sorry this report is so late but I have been “under the weather” for awhile.  Will be a little shorter than unusal.

Unfortunately not much new about the ANA\C issues I talked about in the last letter.  There are bills before the legislature but none specific to diastat.  There are two bills that will be partially effective in January of 2012. They pertain: Child abduction and sex offender identification and reports of missing persons: Violent Crimes Information Center.   Will try and find out more later.

Periop Insider has several interesting items in the latest few issues. They include information on stolen devices posing a risk of infection and that the checklist success linked to the implementation of the processes.  The question asks what nine specific error-prone abbreviations on the Joint Commissions “Do Not Use” List..  The complete abbreviations are on the Periop Insider May 12th issue which you all can access.  One that stands out is IU (for international unit).  Can be mistaken for IV (intravenous or the number 10 (ten). Use Instead Write “international unit”.

ANA Smart Brief has several new Legislative Policy and Regulatory News in the last few issues as well. Two Senators and two from the House are sponsoring bills to loosen criteria for Medicare skilled nursing care.  The bill would count observational care as an inpatient hospital stay in the criteria for Medicare skilled nursing care. Several health organizations support this including the American Medical Association.  The other important senate bill by several Senators and House members has introduced a bill that aims to cut lung cancer deaths by 50% by 2020 with a 5-year screening program to capitalize on the results of the National Lung Screening Trial.  For more information on these issues please log on to the ANA Smart Brief. This is a benefit to all AORN members which is easily accessed on line at the AORN website.  If you need help doing this contact me.

I will report on these issues at a later date.
