January 2010 Newsletter
Happy New Year! The January Chapter meeting is an important one because we will talk about the National AORN Congress, delegates, and so much more. Please don't miss this one or we will miss you!
Welcome back to a new year with AORN SD! I am excited for the opportunity to serve you as your Chapter President. I hope you all experienced a wonderful summer and are ready to come to meeting and spend time with your perioperative peers within the community.
I must apologize for being at the last two meeting…….but I have been working hard on the National Leadership and Development Committee. We have been attending the board meetings in Denver to see what will be coming in the future for AORN. This assists the committee in selecting the best and brightest candidates for the ballot.
This year’s Congress theme is Reaching the “Peak of Perioperative Practice” in the areas of safety, quality and collaboration. I urge each and every one of you to take the time to stress these areas in your daily practice. In addition, I would also like to encourage the membership to send in ideas of what you all would like to see for the monthly educational offering….or better yet come up and present. I promise we are an easy audience.
Our biggest change is that we are now completely electronic for our Newsletter. We have a new and improved website where you will find all our upcoming events and important information. This will continue to develop with your input. Please let me know what works and any areas of improvement. I do realize for some this can be an inconvenience. I encourage all of you to update your information with AORN headquarter, especially your email address since this will be our secondary means to send out any additional information.
I am looking forward to seeing you all at meetings at AMN Healthcare.
Your 2009-2010 President

Legislative News January 2010
A new year and 09 and back are no more. December of 09 did see the signing by the Senate of the “Health Care Reform Bill” but there are still controversial issues that need to be solved as well as getting this bill and the House bill reconciled. Our organizations (AORN and ANA) continue to support “legislation that would guarantee access to affordable quality care for all”.
Repeating my report on priorities in our November newsletter, legislative priorities for 2010 include RN as Circulator, Preserving and Protecting the Perioperative Registered Nurse’s Scope of Practice, Supporting Workplace Safety, patient Safety Initiatives and Healthcare Reform. Nursing priorities also include safe patient handling, eliminating mercury in the healthcare setting, mandatory overtime, nursing education, nurse staffing plans and ratios “nurse protection”, whistleblower protection and workplace violence. Another one of the priorities is related to data collection. For instance the 2009 Stimulus package directs $19 billion to encourage the adoption of electronic health records. ANA\C and the California School Nurse Association are reaffirming their position that allowing unlicensed school personnel to administer insulin is unlawful under California law and jeopardizes the health and well being of California students with diabetes. This was addressed last year but apparently there is now an appeal of the earlier decision that was in ANA’s favor which is causing additional work and testimony to defend the decision.
I will report on these issues next month.
