A Note Of "Thank You" From Afghanistan

A special thank-you to the AORN members from Tri-City Medical Center, Sharp Memorial and Palomar Hospitals for the "boxes" of supplies for our "Pampered Pedicure Party."

We are currently planning on hosting the party Friday, December 14th.  This party will be just in time for the holidays to brighten up the hearts of the women on Camp Mike Spann.  Wow!  I was amazed at all the items collected.

I'll take your suggestion about sharing with our Afghan "sisters."  I will have to see if I can take the extra supplies to the hospital.  There are about five ladies that we work with there.  I will have to e-mail you my newsletter that will have pictures of the party.

Take care and God Bless.  Thank you for your support of the Troops.

Chapter #0511 In Afghanistan

Our drive to help with the Pedicure Party for Lieutenant Commander Mary Sutton and the group of seventeen (17) military and civilian contract nurses building a hospital for the people of Afghanistan was MORE than successful.

Gifts for their party were packaged and shipped in 3 and ¾, 12 x 12 x 18 boxes on Saturday, November 10th.  The boxes also included some chocolate candy, hot chocolate, apple cider drink mixes and an assortment of herbal teas with raw sugar for sweetening.  Of course, in the frenzy to get the packages out, I forgot to include the letter explaining who sent this to them.  Not to worry, I mailed a separate letter to clarify things…..I hope!

Your help in giving this morale boost to a Chapter member and her co-workers, in a more than arduous situation, began with the kind thoughts of Drusilla Elliott.

We thank them for their service and we thank you for your caring.

As teenagers struggle to define themselves, the smallest zit or bad hair day can mean the world. But, Erika, 18, a recent high school graduate from Texas, knows it is all relative.  She was born with microtia and has had to endure teasing throughout her childhood.

“When I went to first grade, my life was miserable,” she said. “I didn’t have friends. Kids wouldn’t talk to me; they would make fun of me. It was a terrible moment for me. I would think, ‘Why do I have an ear like this?’

Erika’s life changed when she was accepted into Fresh Start’s medical program.  On August 4, 2007, Erika had her first surgery, during which a Medpor prosthetic was implanted to create the appearance of an outer ear.

While getting prepped for surgery, Erika was beaming and giving hugs to all the volunteers.  Erika’s Fresh Start experience has transformed her physically, but has also introduced her to a different way of looking at life.  “I’m so happy and I’ve learned a lot while I’ve been here,” said Erika.  “I’ve seen more problems that other people have and it’s made me value everything even more.  You know the one time in your life when you open your eyes and say ‘Wow!’ and you really value what you have?  It is incredible.”

You can also help give children a fresh start!  Volunteer for the November 3 & 4 Surgery Weekend by contacting Jennifer Jones at 760-448-2021. If your hospital or surgery center is interested in Adopting a Surgery Weekend or a Continuing Education presentation about physical deformities and the Fresh Start program, please contact Candise Flippin, RN, MS, CNOR at 760-448-2017 or candise@freshstart.org.
